The Nordic Masters

  • Arnold Madsen


    Arnold Madsen (1924-2010) trained as an upholsterer and first began experimenting with furniture design in the early 1940s.

    Hi breakthrough came in 1944 when he designed the Clam Chair, inspired by the shape of an open mussel. With no formal design training he formed a plaster model by hand and, with the help of Henry Schubell, produced the chair that became known in Danish as the ‘Muslingstol’.

  • Severin Hansen


    Severin Hansen Jr. (1936-2020) was born in Copenhagen to a family of dedicated furniture people. At just 22, he made his most significant contribution to the Modern era movement by designing the iconic Model 36 Desk.

    Hansen had many interesting pursuits outside of furniture making throughout his life, but his incredible legacy was secured during his 20 years as a designer.

  • Kai Kristiansen


    Kai Kristiansen (b. 1929) is a prominent Danish designer known for his monumental contributions to Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture.

    Renowned for his meticulous craftsmanship, functional designs, and elegant simplicity, Kristiansen’s work has become a hallmark of Danish modernism, reflecting the era's focus on clean lines and practical beauty.

  • Alfred Christensen


    Both a manufacturer and a talented artist, Alfred Christensen (1890-1962) was a pivotal figure in the Danish furniture industry during the 1940s and 1950s.

    As co-owner and chief designer of Slagelse Møbelværk, Alfred produced works by renowned designers as well as his own designs, including the famous Boomerang Chair and Model 185 Sofa.

  • Nils & Eva Koppel


    Eva and Nils Koppel (1914-2009, 1916-2006) were a Danish architect couple whose work holds an important place in the history of 20th century Scandinavian design.

    Their furniture pieces, such as the iconic “Model 781” easy chair, are noted for their organic shapes, wooden structure, and often brightly coloured upholstery - very representative of Scandinavian design.
