Kai Kristiansen
A titan of the Danish Modern movement
One of the most prolific designers from the Danish Modern period, Kai Kristiansen successfully combined the fundamental principles of Danish design with modern manufacturing technology to revolutionise the industry.
An industrious designer
Kai Kristiansen’s work has become a hallmark of Danish modernism, reflecting the era's focus on clean lines and practical beauty.
Kristiansen's Entre Series was designed as a modular collection of bedside cabinets, benches and chests with manufacturing efficiency at the forefront of his mind. These designs were a high point in his storied career, demonstrating his genius ability to strike a fine balance between contemporary and classical styles.
His subtle application of elegant details and design idioms is apparent in the chamfered legs and half-moon drawer pulls of his cabinets. The collection was expertly produced by young cabinetmaker Aksel Kjersgaard in the town of Odder in Denmark and achieved commercial success domestically and internationally when it was released in 1956.
"Design should be friendly and cheerful but first and foremost, design should always be based on human needs."
