Severin Hansen

The unconventional hero of Danish design

Severin Hansen’s Model 36 desk is arguably the finest to be designed during the Danish Modern period. Launched in 1958 when the young designer was just 22, the desk, and the accompanying collection of tables, share the distinctive 3-way mitred joint and tapering legs that became Hansen’s trademark.

A designer ahead of his time

Severin Hansen's Model 36 Desk was a design so ahead of its time that it looks distinctly contemporary even by today’s standards.

Together with his Model 35 Bedside Tables, the collection of designs represent a step change to the pre-existing Danish Modern aesthetic and connected with an international audience looking for more contemporary styles.

During an early exhibition of Severin's first collection, he was paid a royal visit by the future Queen of Denmark - Margethe ll - who was so enamoured by the Model 36 desk that her father, King Frederik, purchased one for her as a gift. This desk remains in her personal study to this day.

To honour the former Queen’s part in Severin’s story, we are re-launching these designs as the Margrethe Collection.
