Samspel Sofa, 1956

Samspel Sofa, 1956

The Samspel Sofa was designed in 1956 and first produced by AB Record in Bollnäs, Sweden. It is one of the finest pieces to be designed by Swedish master Carl Malmsten during his long and distinguished career. Samspel (which translates as Interplay from Swedish) was intended as an intimate two-person sofa to encourage conversation. In the latter part of his career Malmsten successfully navigated changing trends in furniture design. He produced several epoch-defining chairs and sofas that were in equal measure both contemporary and classical, thereby providing a crucial link to the design heritage of the early 20th century that he remained a passionate advocate for.

We are proud to re-launch this important example of Swedish Modernism as part of our exclusive Carl Malmsten capsule collection. Samspel is available in a range of upholstery options including fabric and sheepskin.

When was the sofa first shown to the public?

The Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg first unveiled the Samspel sofa in 1956, and it has since become an icon of mid-century Scandinavian design.
