Grete Jalk

PJ 4-2 Armchair, 1959

PJ 4-2 Armchair, 1959

A beautiful lounge chair designed by Grete Jalk for cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen in Denmark, circa 1959. This example comes in stunning rosewood with seat reupholstered in aniline cognac brown leather. The Model 4-2 armchair debuted at the Fredericia Furniture Fair around 1959 alongside a matching dining chair. The back, made from 3 pieces of solid rosewood is the undoubted highlight.

Danish designer Grete Jalk's career began to gain serious momentum in the late 1950s. She made significant contributions to the Danish Modern movement, not least through her editorial work at Mobilia magazine and later curating the essential tome: "40 Years of Danish Furniture Design: 1927-1966" published in the 1980s. It was her long-term collaboration with cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen that produced most of her most memorable pieces, including a series of angular chairs with curved, blade arms.
