Karu Sofa

Karu Sofa

The Karu sofa and armchair were first produced by Gunnar Haimi for his company Haimi Oy in Finland in the 1940s. This new edition of the sofa is available in two sizes, perfectly complimenting the Karu armchair and stool from our Classic Collection. The proportions and curved arms of these pieces epitomise the post-war Nordic aesthetic. This example is upholstered in genuine Australian sheepskin.

Haimi

Gunnar Haimi founded his eponymous furniture company - Haimi Oy - in Finland in 1943, focussing on exceptionally well-upholstered furniture typical of the Finnish aesthetic established by Marta Blomstedt and others.

In the 1960s however, a distinctly modernist style was developed under the guidance of lead designer Yrjö Kukkapuro, with the introduction of materials like fibreglass, metal and leather.

Haimi would go on to achieve huge international acclaim and produce furniture by Marcel Breuer and Tobia Scarpa.

Heritage and craftsmanship

With a background in fine furniture restoration, we ensure accurate, authentic recreations of classic Scandinavian Modern designs. Using premium hardwoods and traditional methods in our workshops in Denmark and Sweden, each piece is hand-finished to highlight natural materials, resulting in unique, character-rich furniture made to last for generations.
