Jacob Kjaer
A pair of classical and compact armchairs attributed to Danish master cabinetmaker Jacob Kjaer. This pair was produced in the 1940s at Kjaer's workshop in Copenhagen. The frames are constructed from solid beech wood and the seats are hand-sprung. Kjaer was a rare figure in Copenhagen in that he both designed and executed his own pieces. He was a driving force in the formation and continuing success of the Cabinetmaker's Guild Exhibitions from 1927 onwards alongside his great friend A.J. Iversen. He was chairman of the Guild from 1952 until his untimely death in 1957.
These examples have been reupholstered in luxurious moss green cotton velvet by Rose Uniacke with the frames restored and the legs refinished.
