Ib Kofod-Larsen
Designed in 1956 by Ib Kofod-Larsen, the Model U-56, or 'Elizabeth' chair is one of the finest works of Danish furniture design produced in the 20th century. It made an instant impact when first presented at the Cabinetmaker's Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen on the stand of producers Christensen & Larsen. This exceptionally rare example was executed in African Paduak wood, a notoriously hard timber with beautiful figuring when finished. The earliest examples of the Elizabeth chair exhibited were made in Padauk.
The chair gained the name ‘Elizabeth’ after Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain acquired a pair during a state visit to Denmark in 1958.
