Grete Jalk
A beautiful pair of lounge chairs designed by Grete Jalk for cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen in Denmark in 1956. This example comes in stunning rosewood with new feather-filled cushions reupholstered in aniline cognac brown leather. The Model 56 lounge chair debuted at the Fredericia Furniture Fair in 1957 and became a great success for Jeppesen's company over the following years.
Danish designer Grete Jalk's career began to gain serious momentum in the late 1950s. She made significant contributions to the Danish Modern movement, not least through her editorial work at Mobilia magazine and later curating the essential tome: "40 Years of Danish Furniture Design: 1927-1966" published in the 1980s. It was her long-term collaboration with cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen that produced most of her most memorable pieces, including a series of angular chairs with curved, blade arms, similar to those of her contemporary Ib Kofod-Larsen.
