Hans Wegner

China Chair, 1944

China Chair, 1944

Designed in 1944, the China Chair remains one of Wegner's most important works and the first of his significant chair designs to be produced at scale. This stunning example was made in rosewood in the 1960s in highly limited quantities and comes with its original black leather cushion.

Taking inspiration from Chinese Ming dynasty antiques, Wegner modified and purified elements of the original design expression to create something new and undeniably Danish. His first attempt at developing the historical furniture type was produced by Johannes Hansen. This more pure version of the form was commissioned by Fritz Hansen and would lay the groundwork for Wegner's further exploration that led to his epoch-defining Wishbone Chair and Round Chair. The China Chair is a high-point in Wegner's storied career and its production was a groundbreaking feat of expert craftsmanship by Fritz Hansen.
