Carl Malmsten

Samspel Sofa, 1956

Samspel Sofa, 1956

The Samspel sofa was designed in 1956 and first produced by AB Record in Bollnäs, Sweden. It is one of the finest pieces to be designed by Malmsten during his long and highly productive career. Samspel (which translates as Interplay from Swedish) was intended as an intimate two-person sofa to encourage conversation. In the latter part of his career Malmsten successfully navigated changing trends in furniture design. He produced several epoch-defining chairs and sofas that were in equal measure both contemporary and classical, thereby providing a crucial link to the design heritage of the early 20th century that he remained a passionate advocate for.

This example has been reupholstered in mohair velvet from Rose Uniacke. Other upholster options are available by request.
