Carl Malmsten

Gävle Chair, 1950s

Gävle Chair, 1950s

The Gävle chair is one of Swedish master Carl Malmsten's more obscure and rare armchair designs. The chair is named after the municipality of Gävle neath Gothenburg, where Malmsten spent considerable time, collaborating with his friend, the civic architect Sven Häggbom. Malmsten had also designed another well-known armchair named his friend years earlier. The Gävle is a slimmer, younger cousin of the Häggbom chair that shares some similar elements. This example was produced in the 1950s by O.H. Sjögren in Tranas, southern Sweden. It has been reupholstered in luxurious 'Moss' cotton velvet. The legs are re-finished, walnut-stained beech.
